Idea for an art show

I have had this idea for a long time now to in the future host an art how at a gallery or an event space that would let me hang paintings and have an installation. My desire would be to have it benefit charities for mental health, mentoring, grief ect. I would like to call the show hope and dispair. I have a very vivid vision of the layout of the floor space, the paintings I would include, the music, ambience even the refreshments.

I would like to raffle or auction a piece to raise even more money beyond the ticket price to attend and food costs. The bellow images are some rough sketches for paintings that will see fruition. Before commenting please view with an open mind and realize I am ok and of sound mind and that art is personal but also meant to be shared. I liken it to a confession and a healing that is communicated in a universal language transcending barriers of culture and written words. Also mind that I have counter pieces which will be posted soon that tackle the subject of hope and joy and feature images of my faith and love ect.

Lastly I am perfectly happy with my life and have a beautiful amazing wife and daughter that are my inspiration, my muses, and my encouragement to pursue using my talents in art not only for my own personal benefit, career, and enjoyment, but also for God and to connect with others who need to be inspired and loved.

  1. These sketches are interesting. I would love to see some titles included with them to get a better understanding of what you are trying to communicate. Art is very subjective and allows for each individual to interpret the piece however they want, but that doesn't mean that the artists ideas and intent are irrelevant.

Set a date for that art show and network, network, network. I wish I could be there to see it, but unless you got is slated for next week I'll proly be in China.

On a side note, did you ever imagine that when we were all hanging out on your porch as kids that I would be going to do mission work in China? I know I didn't, but I read in a book that you should make plans so big and ambitious that they can't possibly succeed without God. I'm still working to do that and I encourage you to do the same. Could the show be bigger, involve more artist, benefit more people?

Dream big and then follow this one piece of advice, "Commit to the Lord whatever you do and your plans will succeed." Prov. 16:3

This art is your gift and talent from God. Keep on using it brother!

    1. Thanks for your support I will keep you updated as I progress and I hope you will me as well. I would love to help support your mission in china anyway I can and would even be fine giving money or sending items when needed (within my means of course XD). As to whether the show would have others I have thought about that and I think it would be great once I get my stuff fleshed out more to contact others and let them be inspired by the theme as well and to use it as a personal catharsis and medium for purging their demons and also sharing their hope. I would love for poets to write or speak, and even would be cool with music and interpretive dance participating as well as other physical art mediums beyond 2D. The titles are plays in song titles an lyrics or characters in fiction. In order: 1) devil inside 2) happiness in slavery 3) I'm only happy when it rains 4) the triptych 5) in the white room with black curtains 6) lasty Jacob marley. The Plan is to have a game where attendants would guess the titles based on songs playing at the show. This would be for a prize donated by myself or a participating charity. For happiness in slavery i was thinking of having a volunteer dress up as the guy in the sketch wearing sack cloth Slave shorts a torn shirt and the burlap backpack with the computer flatscreen monitor and keyboard. For the white room with black curtains I want to build an installation with a person in the small room which would have mini blinds and black out curtains the person planted would be chained to a fisher price kids desk that has a computer on the table hisbhan chained to the mouse and the other pulled back being scanned by a laser over a barcode. The idea is that you would have to pinch apart he blinds to look in on the prisoner in the dim lit room. The others are going to be large format paintings. And this is only scratching the surface. I have many other pieces I just didn't upload that day because the concept sketches were in another book.

On a separate note it is crazy to think you are going to china and I am actually still doodling. Best of luck I will pray for you guys

  2. Juxtapose pain with hope in the pieces you select. God is hope, love, peace, and strength; in a word "healing." Ditto to trusting in God, expanding, and maybe some Blues :)

    1. Thanks for the comment and the encouragement. I cannot wait to upload the "hopeful" ones too I have a few that are Christ themed and borrow from styles of Christian art thought time I.e mideval and renaissance catholic Protestant ect. I like the sacred heart visual motif and such as the Hispanic art and even the old Gustav dore wood cuttings from paradise lost and the devine comedy. I also like surrealist work and I have some really imaginative ideas for those as well. Again thanks for the comments and support as well as suggestions

  3. A lot of artists tackle angst and despair. My favorite variation on the theme lately has been this: http://thechive.com/2012/08/09/self-portraits-done-to-a-different-drug-every-day-45-photos/

    1. Hey thanks for sharing that link with me it was interesting to see tr drastic style changes and the matter of mediums that went with each as well. The looser psychedelics had open mediums and colors I.e. paints pastels ect... Whereas the narcos had a controlled jittery approach to them with a highly controlled medium flowing suit I.e. pen and ink or pencil. Again thanks for the contribution.
